Possibly this was sloppy terminology; I was lumping Japan in with the rest of the SE Asian region.

Hitachi? Daifuku in automation... etc...
I think the high dollar is a
*significant* negative for US equipment companies, although
Japanese troubles may make for some difficulty for Japanese companies
to keep up adequate R&D. Didn't Ian post something awhile back
metnioning a huge (year-over-year? quarter to quarter?)
rise in Japanese semi equipment sales? I would assume this will be
an important factor, until the dollar weakens. It is true, however,
that with an increasing fraction of spending done by non-Asian
manufacturers (especially with Japanese cutbacks),
one might expect an offsetting tendency to purchase more US
equipment (I'm *guessing* the Japanese tend to purchase their own
equipment somewhat more than we do; maybe this holds true
for other Asian cos.) I seem to recall US companies having about
half the world semi equipment market, but that's just an unreliable
memory.
