So What? You no like dig? Everybody like dig brah. 'But please don't make the assumption of racism.'...I ended up with a response that can be taken that way; but my implications were really that the 'big' plantation institutions of the past generated a great amount of resentment and 'backlash' among the people (and their decedents) who worked under them. One of the major results was a democratic party that sought to, and did, combine the power of the economically deprived minorities. Its success, and what now may appear as juggernaut invincibility, is in some part due to the 'memory' of a group of sub-cultures that share that long period of economic privation. Of course now, it has largely been turned on its head. We have enjoyed generations of success, and waves of power elite coming from those formerly repressed groups; japanese, hawaiian, filipino. And for many people now it is the democratic party and its associated organizations that represent the oppressive political force. With regard to the need to dig brah. If you go to smaller island groups you will find the same thing happening. I'm not saying it doesn't happen on the Mainland. But there is that 'island way' kind of flavor to some kinds of hole digging. Maybe it is the fact that public works was one of the first areas to open up to local peoples. So you have a longer and stronger historical institution among hole diggers. And each group of hole diggers is highly organized and guards it power and information quite closely. So....when you got to go dig you don't say to the other guy hey brah I gonna go dig over on Keeaumoku today you need do somethin in the hole? No you run over to Keeaumoku and go dig! Then you cover da buggah up real fast and sit back and have one big laugh when that other group of diggahs go look like some real lolo buggahs diggin in da same place next week!! Public works, it would seem, is not the best institution for 'entrenched' political structure. go figgah! mnmuench
