John Malone and Leo Hindery Clarify TCI Position on HDTV Transmission

ATLANTA, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- This afternoon, at the National Cable Television Association convention in Atlanta, Georgia, John C. Malone, Chairman of the Board, Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) and Leo J. Hindery, Jr., President of TCI, together clarified TCI's position on HDTV.

TCI, along with, among others, Fox and ABC, encourage progressive scan as the transmission format for HDTV, for reasons of bandwidth and spectrum efficiency, customer economics and picture quality.

Notwithstanding, the General Instrument DCT-5000 advanced digital set-top devices which TCI intends to deploy are capable of passing through to HDTV receivers any of 480p, 720p or 1080i.

TCI is eager to work today, with any national and local broadcaster which commits to 720p, on all of the on-screen and other attractive features available as complements to that format. With respect to broadcasters which are desirous of adopting more demanding and inefficient formats, such as 1080i, TCI will continue to work with vendors to accommodate such demands.

No cable customer with an HDTV receiver will be disenfranchised from receiving an HDTV broadcast signal through the cable system. Any broadcaster can always, of course, broadcast its chosen HDTV format over the air.

Tele-Communications, Inc. is traded through the TCI Group, the TCI Ventures Group and the Liberty Media Group common stocks. The Series A and Series B TCI Group common stocks are traded on the National Market tier of the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbols of TCOMA and TCOMB, respectively.
