Fred, I think our strategies are similar. I also use the sector indices for stuff I don'f follow closely. Airlines and banks, for example. I just don't like the macro indices. And, if I know an area well, ala technology or biotech, I think I am better off picking individual issues. For example, despite the fact that the macro indices are at all-time highs, my puts on Micron and Presstek have done great. So, I think it comes down to playing to your strength.

However, I still think it is sad that fund managers, at least some of whom are smart people with all the resources in the world for discerning among issues, are mostly closet indexers. They do have that Ph.D in bioengineering on staff and, IMHO, they aren't using him well. MB
