Mary, re: <It is a shame when analysts try to get ahead of the "story" and have as their main objective to "move" the stock. >
You must be referring to a couple of your favorite analysts. ;-)
For the past six months the analysts consensus has been consistently down month to month. And they have been right on. Managements guidance typically takes the form of confirmation or denial of the estimates. I don't remember Intel telling us ahead of time that 1997 would come in at $3.88. And last October, when the consensus estimate for 1998 was $4.69, did Intel say that was way too high?
So over the past six months the consensus has drifted down from $4.69 to $3.16. A 30% decrease in earnings estimates in six months. And now Intel says they are comfortable with that!
And 1999 has dropped from $5.30 to $3.84 in the same six months. And I doubt if Intel will even comment on those forecasts.
I don't think anyone has a real handle on this changing market. But I think the analysts are at least providing a leading consensus indicative of trends.
