Umm, actually, the 50% is the initial margin requirement. Maintenence requirement is 25%, so unless they raise the maintenance requirement as well (which they probably will), open positions should be maintainable. Sorry, I wasn't thinking when I asked the question.

Of course, it makes think of the political heat if the gov't forced some of the boomers to close their margined positions. But I'm sure the Fed won't take politics into account.
