NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Advest Inc. Tuesday
initiated coverage of four makers of semiconductor
equipment. Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT), Novellus
Systems Inc. (NVLS) and Applied Science &
Technology Inc. (ASTX) all got strong "buy" ratings,
while Lam Research Corp. (LRCX) got a "market
perform."

Advest estimated Applied Materials will earn $1.45 a
share in 1998, and set a 12-to-18-month share-price
target of $50.

The firm estimated Novellus will earn $2.10 a share in
1998, and set a 12-to-18-month share-price target of
$70.

Advest estimated Applied Science will earn 56 cents a
share for the fiscal year ending in June, and set a
12-to-18-month share-price target of $25.

Finally, Advest estimated Lam Research will lose 3
cents a share for the fiscal year ending in June, and set a
12-to-18-month share-price target of $35.
