JP,

Don't mix hardware and software in your WinTel vs. UNIX arguments as both software systems run on the same hardware.

Remember that DELL will job the support to a UNIX expert so that only those that need support will have to pay for it.

The X86 boxes will be phased out like the 8080s of old. Once the new programs need a different platform, and the old platform is not supported anymore, the market will be coerced into buying the new platform. As this software ages, and the new platforms fail to run the old software, the programmers will just move on to the new platform, dragging the market behind them. We will be able to continue to use out antiquated system to access the SI thread and follow the market though!

JMHO,

Ken

Jim Patterson says:
<< LoD,
I keep telling you, The stock will turn before the Fundamentals turn.
Well, in these typs of parabolic, manical situations, that is the way it normaly happens. >>

Fair Enough

<<CPQ and HWP price cuts again.>>
Perhaps thats cuz they have warehouses of the old (not 400mhz, not b2 chipset) rotting in their respective channels.

<<Will DELL have to talk about ASP in their EPS report ?
time will tell.>>
They usually do. Why do you think they wont? Personally, these new
400mhz cpu with 100mhz system bus are the first generation to cause me to lust since i built my own 120mhz several years ago. Its a touch call tho. Each day i wait up goes my DELLstock so i could afford a better one.

<<Oh yea,
Here is a thought,
How will DELL, King of Wintel assembly, handle Merced ?>>
Merced comes from Intel. Won't Intel tell DELL how to do it?

<<Merced may be better suited for Unix in the early going.
Does DELL have the Unix expertise that will be needed for such a complicated archeticure ?
Which flavor of Unix will DELL support for IA-64 ?
Does DELL have the resources to support all of them ?>>

Perhaps DELL just waits till winnt does ia-64 and sells boxes "en-masse".
