Well, the man with whom I spoke was quite contrite, and accepted my corrections as constructive. He was, however, quite willing to blame the educational system for not teaching him to write grammatically. (He has a Ph.D.) On the last point I have some sympathy: I wish the schools placed more emphasis on this sort of thing. But ultimately we are all responsible for our abilities or lack thereof: if someone wants to learn grammar, all they have to do is go buy a book and work their way through it. (Note: I believe 'their' in this last sentence is acceptable usage.)
