Paul,

If an OEM wants to sell a $599 PC and make a profit, Intel processors are not an option.

All of your huffing and puffing about "quality" amounts to little more than nonsense. I have never seen any suggestion in the press that Cyrix CPU's are less reliable than Intel's. An extra 10-20% of idle CPU power is not worth doubling the price.

Paul,

If they use the MediaGX, they will have to sell it for $499 - about $299 cheaper than an Intel-based PC.

I don't think it has anything to do with Intel. If they can put together a box that can sell for $499, they probably will do it.

Have you been to a home electronics store recently? It's full of cheap stuff. The cheap stuff outsells the quality stuff by a wide margin.

Cheapness of computer stuff may create new markets. For example, I received recently a little radio in mail from Bloomberg that connects only to their radio station (in NYC). They can give away this stuff "for free" because the cost of the radios and mailing is very cheap.

Remember - putting a Cyrix chip inside a PC is tanatamount to telling the consumer "Cheap Stuff Inside - Buy At Your Own Risc - That's Why We Are Selling This So Cheaply".

More FUD? Don't you get tired of it? People buy lot of stuff that's not "the best". Last time I looked on the street, there were plenty of cars other than Lincoln Navigators, Toyota Landcruisers, BMWs etc.

People are happy in their Camry's, VWs, Chevys. They go around not at all feeling guilty about not buying the most expensive, or the best stuff.

Joe

Paul,

Speaking of quality, here is my subjective experience: My shiny new Intel NetExpress PRO/100 print server can't seem to detect if it is on normal or fast Ethernet.

A call to Intel Technical support resolved the problem quickly, with a workaround of forcing it to 100Mbs. Good enough for small office, but not so great for large installations.

We also had an older Intel ethernet card die, but it was just one of many, and it worked ok for a long time. (lower failure rate than the print server, but higher than the 3com cards we buy now, that have so far been 100% problem free)

So Intel and quality, are not synonymous. You and your sidekicks put out a lot of crap about a quality of CPUs, but I have dealt with a lot of computers, and seen a lot of components die, but not a single CPU (Intel or non-Intel).

The sad part is, that so far, the FUD has worked well for Intel. I have benefited from it as an Intel sharehoder in the past, and as customer of non-Intel CPUs (which are cheaper as a result of FUD spread by Intel and Intel funded front companies). I have suffered from it as a Cyrix/NSM shareholder.

But I am getting sick and tired of beating to death an issue that's irrelevant.

Joe
