Don't knock yourself out Tom<G> Mike
you've been busy to.
I agree ATVI makes great games, i've enjoyed
them for years. I put my money in companys i
like, not companys that throw crap at the walls
and see what sticks.
As far as the industry goes, i'm so jaded
at this point, i have more fun playing games these
days, and not watching the companys as much as i used to.
I do know when they run up, short the suckers
if you are so inclined, THQI and Edios are great
examples, don't mess with ERTS though, although
earnings are almost here, and i'm thinking they will
miss.
The Internet is not helping this industry like
i really thought it would. I think more people are
spending their time surfing, and pirating games
from Warez sites. CDR is taking a big toll to.
If i look at ATVI's chart you will see
it runs up a couple months before Christmas, then goes back down.
Do i really want to buy a stock or do other people,
that follow this pattern year after year? Can ATVI
finally get up to at least 18 and stay there?
I still own a few shares, i'm holding them for a
another year, and hoping with all the consoles, new
technology, and hopefully profits, my investment pays off.
Something is going to have to give, maybe
we wll be bought out,but what kind of games will
we get from these gorillas if we are. Look what
happened to Sierra when Cendant bought them. They
have released some really terrible games.
Back to being Jaded,:-)

Alex

Regarding mergers/buyouts...

Could you elaborate on why you think Broderbund
makes a good partner for so many?

...and...
<I seriously doubt MSFT will buy anyone,
though it would be relatively easy and cheap to do.>

Microsoft ought to sell off the gaming part, dump
all their entertainment into one pile, and sell it.
They blew Cinemania--that could have been big.
I think the sum of Microsoft's parts are bigger
than the whole. So, spin the games off, detach
it from the OS division, it would be a cheap way
to create a "smaller, friendlier Microsoft", at
least in everybody's eyes. Now that I think about
it, dump MSN in there and get rid of all of it.
With the sale pay a one time dividend.

Okay, I'll draw a line between two on your lists Tom;

Activision and 3DO,
this pairing would get some better RPG-ness
into Activision, let's get away from the
puzzle games I can never solve damn it! Now I should
point out that I have not actually played any of the
games from the Might and Magic series, but I'll post
a follow-up if I like M&M6.

Speaking of RPG's, I loved Wizardry--The very
first one on an appleIIe when I was in Jr. High
School nearly twenty years ago, (ouch!)
and Dark Savant later on PC, I also liked Realms
of Arkania--Hope Might and Magic re-captures
some of the magic for me, haven't seen any
RPG's that looked good to me lately. I should
have prefaced this with the fact I don't
remember ever having played an Activision
RPG--are there any good ones which are not
puzzle games?

Next thought about why this could be a good pairing:
What is Activision's best real time strategy game?
Not the hybrid first-person like Battlezone (which
I loved the demo of/still shoppin for the P/PII he he)
but more like mprs's (mprsd right now) upcoming
Mechcommander, I have to say, Blizzard's Starcraft
is just not doing it for me, and maybe the masses
will tend to go for a simpler more intuitive game
like what Army Men looks like--I loved Sir Tech's
Jagged Alliance, it was simple to get into, but
engaging and addictive once you're in. There are
too many real time strategy games, and they all look
the same to me. I suspect they're too hard for the
less practiced gamers out there, and I wonder how
many new gamers this genre brings in. I think these
gaming companies should want to sell to the hard
core gamers by having the best titile in each
genre, but also build the franchise by adding
new gamers with simpler, more intuitive games.

Anyway that was my gaming merger thought of the
day, my other idea is not as thought out yet,
it would be a pairing of ATVI and MPRS to get
a lot of mech under one roof, and perhaps clear
up the flap over Civilization.

I don't have any background in business, so for
all I know pairing companies just to put all
the good products together and round out your
offerings might not be the way it is done, but
what the heck, it is fun to flip through one's
gaming mags and try to see how certain companies
might compliment the products of others.
