Your son is very correct when he states that one needs to be able to read in order to become a studio musician. And not only that, you must be able to interpret the music and play it as if you've practiced it for 10 years, with the benefit of only one rehearsal. That's the way it works...rehearsal, take, rehearsal, take. It's a great challenge and is always fun (and sometimes terrifying).
