Will Iomega survive 1999?

At first, the situation looks bleak. With projected losses Q after Q, and reliability problems with the bread and butter Zip line of products, Iomega's situation looks grim indeed.

Sony's HiFi 200MB floppy replacement is due to come to market soon, along with Teac and their 95 Million drives/year production means. Grim indeed.

Iomega's Vapor! 40MB toy drive is due late Summer or so, and will probably sell a few at first to some Iomega investors and tech-heads. Then- nothing, as people realize that it won't work with anything on the market.

Castlewood's 2.16 Gig Orb drive spells certain doom for Jaz and jaz2, both horribly priced in this saturated market. Orb is due any week now. We'll see if they can get them out the door. With Aiwa teaming up with Castlewood, the production should have little problem ramp-up wise.

I doubt that Iomega will shrivel up and die, just shrivel and stagnate to a level just above where SyQuest is right now.

So, to answer my own question, Yes. Yes Iomega will survive 1999. But with a much lower market-cap than right now.
