NEW YORK, May 5 (Reuters) - The number of rigs exploring
for oil and natural gas in the United States stood at 876 as
of May 1, down four from the previous week, and five below the
year-ago total of 881, Baker Hughes Inc reported.
The number of rigs drilling on land remained at 723, while
rigs working offshore fell by three to 133. The number of rigs
active in inland waters fell by one to 20.
Among the individual states, the biggest changes occurred
in Texas, down by nine, and in Kansas and Oklahoma, both down
by five, and in Louisiana, up by five.
The Gulf of Mexico rig count fell by three to 132.
The number of rigs searching for gas rose by two to 601,
the number of rigs searching for oil fell by six to 272, while
the number of miscellaneous drilling projects remained at
three.
There were 218 rigs drilling directionally, 53 drilling
horizontally and 605 drilling vertically.
In Canada, the number of working rigs rose by 17 from the
previous week, to 114, versus 175 one year ago.
The weekly rig count reflects the number of rigs exploring
for oil and gas, not those producing oil and gas.
