From a Linux using buddy:

-------------------

I'm travelling north at the moment and had the opportunity to attend
the Silicon Valley Linux Users Group meeting tonight. These guys are
on a roll: Two months ago, Linus spoke. Last month, Marc Andressen.
Tonight, Tim O'Reilly. Next month, Larry Wall. Can they keep it up?
I estimated tonight's attendance at 250!

O'Reilly is on a campaign to promote "open source software", including
Linux, sendmail, Perl, BIND, Apache, and now Navigator/Communicator.
I'll try to remember some details to tell you all Monday night. But
the most interesting idea to me was conceptual. Tim thinks that the
Web is now the API of the world. He thinks people are starting to use
Web sites as subroutines. An example, a pager company that does 411
phone number lookup to two-way pagers. But they don't have their own
number data base, they issue an inquiry to someone else's Web site
and throw away all the extraneous garbage on the reply.
