Shockwave 2: Netscape to give away more source code!!!

It's just getting crazier. What's Bill gonna do?

_Netscape To Give Away Source Code For Directory Server _
Netscape Communications plans to give away the source code
for the front-end tools for its Directory Server--another
attempt by the company to enlist third-party support for
its software.

Starting this summer, Netscape will make the source code
for its Directory Software Developer's Kit and its Console
One administrative interface available on its Web site,
says Frank Chen, group product manager at Netscape. The two
products provide developers with APIs, sample code, and
tools for creating intranet applications that can be
administered through Netscape's Mission Control console.

Netscape is hoping that directory-enabled third-party
software will encourage the adoption of its Directory
Server 3.0 software. "People don't buy directories," Chen
says. "They buy solutions. The more applications that talk
to our directory, the better off we are."

The directory server provides a central repository of
information about applications and network resources, and
supports the standard Lightweight Directory Access
Protocol. The company in March started giving away the code
for its Communicator 5.0 client suite in hopes that
independent developers would provide innovations for the
software. --Monua Janah
