FWIW, I usually stay away from stocks with spreads greater than 1/2 point (depending on the price, of course).

But putting in orders at the bid to buy, or at the ask to sell is a good policy especially with the new rules. I find it usually doesn't take long for the order to go through. I do this on all stocks I buy unless it's something you need to do immediately (a fast mover up or down).

that's how i do it. I put bids/offers to become the inside bid/offer 1/16 below/above the best offer/bid.
