Dell, Cisco, U S West to Announce Plan For Computers With Digital Modems

Dell Computer Corp., Cisco Systems Inc. and U S West
Communications Group Inc. are expected Wednesday to announce
plans to roll out personal computers with high-speed digital
modems that work over traditional copper telephone wires.

The companies said the package would be available to consumers
in certain U S West markets this fall, around the same time an
international telecommunications group is set to vote on standards
for high-speed access to the Internet....

The goal is for consumers to be able to plug their computers into a
phone jack and surf the Internet with ease.

Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas, said it will make Cisco's
ADSL modems available in its Dimension XPS personal
computers. Dell said its XPS computers start at $2,149. Cisco is a
networking-gear company in San Jose, Calif.
