Mohan I used to know Paul Theroux very well, he of "The Great Railway Bazaar". We used to compare Indian train journeys and stories. I had a certain expert knowledge of the Indian railway system...

These people Any and Suzanne are total wankers. They are tourists not travellers. I'll tell you the difference Mohan.

I know this is hard to believe but as I used to tell Paul,"... you have absolutely never met anybody...anyone who was crazy enough to travel 70,000 miles (not kilometers) on Indian 3rd class trains. This got to be an odd obssession, you see...something that I truly couldn't break."

I once totted that up Mohan and I spent something like 6 months day and night in Indian 3rd class "boggies".

I had this two inch thick book of Inain train scheduals and I used to stop somewhere in the middle of the night and pour over this book...me and chai khanna man who the only people awake in some desolate mid night stop on the way to nowhere.

Someday I will finish my book on all this.

I recall the 50 odd hour trip from Calcutta to Bombay was something like $1.64... I got a student discount on the third class ticket of 50% because I went to an Indian university. The "regular" ticket was $3.28.

Ah, the world has changed my boy. They don't even have those great clay chai cups anymore.

Between times have you seen what George F is doing in creating friends to the north?

My best to you,

Well, I, such that I am, thought "Andy and Susanne" was lovely. Youth, adventure, trying to have an open mind, living life, doing no harm, experiencing, chasing fear, etc.

BTW, my 50th birthday celebration (December 2005) will be a month-long private railcar trip in India.

Anyone care to join? Any url's, Earl?
