-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 1998--Leading the industry with the industry's highest performing internetworking solution, Cabletron Systems (NYSC:CS) today announced that its SmartSwitch Router is now shipping in volume. The SmartSwitch Router performs 100 times faster than a traditional router, providing customers with the power necessary to drive business-critical, bandwidth-hungry applications like distance learning, electronic commerce and voice/video/data convergence. Customer testing and real-world installations demonstrate that the SmartSwitch Router provides the performance necessary for driving these applications, with no compromise in functionality.
University of California, Riverside
At the University of California, Riverside (UCR), the SmartSwitch Router has been selected for the new core network in its College of Engineering. With student enrollments in the school's Bourns College growing by over 30 percent yearly, the university is relying on the next-generation switch router to provide a major boost in performance and security.
Positioned at the heart of the network, the SmartSwitch Router provides the college with quick access to network servers for hundreds of lab computers, and massive packet forwarding rates for supporting multimedia, remote dormitory room communication and 3D modeling applications.
"We used to spend a lot of effort designing our networks to avoid the performance penalty of going through routers, but not anymore," said Professor Mart Molle of UCR's Computer Science Department. "The old rule that states -- switch when you can, route when you must -- does not apply to the SmartSwitch Router."
Inprise
Similarly, Inprise (formerly Borland Corporation), a leading provider of high-performance products for software application developers, was seeking a new backbone solution to solve the problem of network congestion.
"We were looking to upgrade our FDDI backbone -- Gigabit Ethernet offered an obvious migration," said Michael Overby, director of information services, Inprise. "Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router offered such an outstanding combination of performance, functionality, and manageability, that we will be using them to build our new network backbone. These full function routers cost less than more traditional solutions, and deliver full function, wire-speed routing even when all the features are enabled."
University of Miami
The University of Miami selected the SmartSwitch Router to pave the way for more robust, secure electronic communications. Ranked within the nation's top 50 networked universities, the college has aggressively planned to connect seven additional residential dormitories.
"This summer we will add an additional 4,000 computer connections, establishing 10 Mbps of bandwidth for each student," said Stewart Seruya, assistant director, telecommunications, University of Miami. "We have selected two SmartSwitch Routers to eliminate the inevitable bottlenecks created by 4,000 web-surfing students, without having to chose between security and performance."
With pricing beginning at $499 per port for Fast Ethernet, Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router offers:
--15 - 30 million packets-per-second forwarding capability
--System capacity of two million Layer-4 flows/250,000 route
entries
--IP, IPX and wire-speed multicast support, as well as security
via access control lists and Layer-4 application prioritization
The eight slot SmartSwitch Router (SSR-8) is currently shipping, with up to 14 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 56 10/100 ports. A 16 slot SmartSwitch Router (SSR-16), supporting up to 30 Gigabit Ethernet and 120 10/100 ports, is expected to begin shipping in the second half of 1998.
Visit Cabletron's Networld + Interop booth (# 5041) for a 30 million packet-per-second SSR-16 demonstration.
