Record First Quarter Earnings Per Share; $0.40 in 1998 vs. $0.27 in
1997 -- a 48% increase on 12% Sales Growth

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 1998--Furniture Brands
International (NYSE:FBN) announced today record operating results for
the first quarter ended March 31, 1998. This now represents nine
consecutive quarters of record operating performance.
Net sales for the first quarter were $505.3 million compared to
$449.9 million reported last year, an increase of 12.3%. Net
earnings and diluted net earnings per common share were $21.6 million
and $0.40, respectively, an increase of 26.7% and 48.1%,
respectively, over the results reported last year. The 1998 net
earnings per common share were based upon 53.9 million diluted common
shares outstanding versus 63.7 million for the same period last year.
