Hi Toy

There's another area which you didn't mention that could affect a company's move to NT from NetWare - the desire for a semi-permanent or contracting IS staff to learn a new environment. I've come across people that believe that NT will grow in the future - to what extent they don't know - and want to hitch their star to that wagon as well.
A lot of times people who are certified as CNE or MCNE will decide to add Microsoft's qualification to their list and start introducing NT servers for no particularly good reason. They get the training, their employer pays, then they go and start looking for work with their new resume in an NT market where there are far fewer qualified network admins (hoping for and getting higher salaries). Result for the company - they get the 'joy' of a new server type being introduced, they get to pay for their technician's training, the newly trained technician leaves the company and has to be replaced (with someone who knows NetWare and NT, therefore perpetuating the cycle) - and they have to live with the so-called solution that was introduced in the first place.

Yep, these people really *do* think things through.

Peter

The Statistics were published here some time ago

Frankly there isn't anything to argue about. Nt dominates the small server market. Go check the numbers. I posted them here once.

Novell's 3.X customers used their old Novell file servers as the data repository for custom written data base apps. It was simple file sharing stuff written in Dbase, Paradox etc. etc. Not Oracle client server. These people have gone with their VARs to NT. They now run the newer version of these customized apps on NT.

The truly stupid people are the ones who ignore what the marketplace tells them and support their own prejudices in the face of declining sales, revenues and profits.

Go find a story about NT small server customers switching back to Novell to run their database apps. When you find some evidence of this let me know. It will mean Novell is a good investment again.

With the current enterprise only strategy at Novell (what do you think all of Schmidt's touchy feely stuff with MSFT is all about anyway?) I'm looking towards another round of downsizing.
