05/06 3:34P (DJ) SportsTicker: Rios Ousted, Rain Causes Delays At German Open
Story 4550 (N/DJN, N/DJWI, N/SPT, N/TNS)
Top seed Marcelo Rios of Chile, showing signs of rust after his
injury-induced layoff, was upset today in the second round of the $2.2 million
German Open in Hamburg, the fourth Super 9 tennis event of the year.
Rios, who was atop the world rankings for a four-week span before an
inflamed left elbow knocked him out of play, fell to South African Wayne
Ferreira, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Rios took the number one player in the world from
American Pete Sampras when he won the Lipton Championships, but lost it to
Sampras when he was unable to defend his Monte Carlo Open championship two
weeks ago.
Today's schedule was cut short due to rain, postponing six matches with
seeded players, including number four Alex Corretja of Spain and sixth-seeded
Karol Kucera of Slovakia. Sixteenth seed Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia, playing
under the covered center court, is trailing Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, 4-6,
3-1, in the final match of the day.
Rios, who has three titles this year, lost for just the fourth time in 29
matches in 1998, but it was his second early exit of the year. The Chilean
also lost to Brett Steven in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Open and had
a 12-match winning streak snapped.
In the first match of the day, third seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov's claycourt
woes continued as Austrian Thomas Muster handed the Russian a 6-4, 6-2
