I have a general question that anyone could answer. I recently bought a laptop. I use Dell at work and it is OK. When I was comparing prices I found Dell to be much more expensive than the competing brands. I looked at laptop rankings and did not see Dell there.
If they are so much more expensive (I paid 33% less for my higher rated product). Why does anyone here think Dell will trounce the the competition? I bought a Japanese laptop hands down and saved about $1,000. That is a huge savings! You have to be either a shareholder, work for the company or some type of dell fan to stick to Dell and pay all that extra money.

jef,
You might look at what IBM shares have done since that firm cut 180,000 (yes, thats thousand) employees from the late 80's to the early nineties....

re CPQ and DEC layoffs

Seems that I recall steve (hpeace) posting that the DEC acquisition would be a simple process. Looks like the first dividend of the merger will be a lot of personal grief. I'm thankful that the job market is strong now, so that most of those ex-employees should have a good chance of getting new positions fairly quickly.

I wonder how the terminations will affect earnings for next quarter, or if the charges will be incremental over several quarters. And will the expenses be charged against DEC or CPQ?
