Now assume you are Joe six-pack and you walk to CompuUSA where they have
Macs and PCs sitting side by side.

Uh, this IMAC 's got a 233 Mhz C..P..U, same as the compaq over here...

A 15" monitor, huh, just like the compaq

32 MB RAM, same. 4 GB, same. 4X CD-ROM same. 33.6K modem, same.
Software, same. Price, same.

But, uh-he-he, accounting's got a PC at work, so I guess I'll buy the compaq for junior..

From a marketing perspective the list is not impressive.

Alomex, please. This is a bargain deal for a pc or mac. period.

Hellooo!! The only Compaq in this class is the Presario 4880, with an SRP of $2599. The iMac is faster, cooler, and -- assuming your Joe six-pack can add -- you can buy 2 iMacs for the price of 1 of those Compaq's!

Well, I don't agree with Alomex's analysis, I do agree with
the conclusion. I am not overly impressed with this offering.
And while some may find it snazzy, others may find it too toy-like.
Is it an expensive Nintendo? Could be they chose the design to
make sure it would not eat into the office market? And a 33.6K
modem doesn't hack it with the new 56K standard out there. Since
this is a software modem, there is always a small possibility it
could be upgraded to support 56K, I guess. Of course, it is a
24X, not a 4X CD-ROM, but I presume that was a typo on the thread.
Software is pretty nice bundle, actually, if you have use for the
database app. Now, what would really be a kick, is if you could
order it in any of a RAINBOW of translucent colors. THAT would be
a splash in the consumer market. Little Suzy can get a pink one,
little Johnny wants a blue one, Dad wants a grey one. You listening,
Apple!!!

Alomex,

That's like saying Joe 6-pack goes shopping for cars and he can't tell the difference between a Mercedes Benz and an Altima. But here the Benz doesn't cost much more.

They've both got engines. They've both got tires. Give the salesmen some credit too.

Regards,

Scott

>> From a marketing perspective the list is not impressive. <<

Very true, Alomex. Two things in particular. The 33k baud modem and the apparent maximum 15" screen. Neither of these two very important items are a match for today's standards.

Now, if you could get those two item as an upgrade, accordingly, (56K modem and 17" screen) for another $150...

Another problem is the "233" stigma. Who will know it's faster than Intel's 300?
