Quad, I can't accurately speak on NT's memory protection other than to say that NT does allow VXDs (certain drivers) to bypass NT's supposed memory protection in order to gain performance.

So that is likely what the article might have been referring to.

As for Gartner Group, anyone that puts Gartner Group down better be able to backup their claims first. Although there are a few times that I might not agree with GG, they are highly respected in the Computer Industry. So you could ask this keithsha to back his claims because contrary to his opinions, GG is well respected so it "doesn't speak for itself".
