Perhaps the upcoming market collapse is what America needs to snap it out of this extended period of moral decline.

Whatever happened to things that mattered like community, democracy, or honesty? Instead, we live in a country fixated on material things and wealth. We have far too many people who don't care what gets trampled, as long as they get "their share" of the goodies. How else can you explain things like American stockholders supporting business ventures in countries that are really repressive, like Burma, China, or Nigeria? How else can you explain corporate chieftains like Michael Eisner getting paid hundreds of millions of dollars worth of stock options, while using sweatshop labor in places like Haiti or Vietnam to make Disney clothing and paying the workers 28 cents an hour? Or, what about the hordes of fuel inefficient sports utility vehicles like Jeep Cherokees and toxic smoke belching diesel powered Mercedes on the road?

There seems to be this prevalent attitude in America of "I'm going to get mine, and f*** everybody else!"

Maybe, necessity in the future will force Americans to lead more frugal and mindful lives. For a good starting place on this topic, they might want to check igc.apc.org
