The proliferation of cheap 8MB boards is interesting. I think it's because of relatively mainstream 16 Mbit x16 SDRAM chips are cheaper than graphics-specific 8 Mbit SGRAM devices. Four of those SDRAM chips yields 8 Mbyte memory with a 64-bit datapath, just what is required, and with the same chip count as a 4MB SGRAM board. It also follows that the NVIDIA RIVA ZX, with its 128-bit datapath, cannot use these SDRAM for an 8 Mbyte board, which I imagine might have cost them a few design wins (despite the superior 128-bit performance). It looks like 8 Mbyte is going to be very popular for add-in cards because of this very unusual development in the market for graphics memory chips.
