US WEST COMMUNICATIONS INC, DELL COMPUTER CORP and CISCO SYSTEMS
INC said they will introduce personal computers with high-speed
digital modems that work over traditional copper telephone wires.
Dell will make Cisco ADSL modems available on certain Dell
Dimension XPS desktop personal computers this year. Cisco's ADSL
modems allow PC users to receive voice and data services through a
single phone line connected to a PC at speeds of up to 7 megabits,
or nearly 125 times faster than standard 56k modems. U S West has
said it plans to introduce asymetric digital subscriber line
(ADLS) technology in more than 40 cities in its 14-state region by
mid-year. (Reuters 11:08 AM ET 05/06/98) For the full text story,
