OpenCable Progress Told
Wired News Report

12:43pm 4.May.98.PDT
As evidence that interactive cable is making
headway, cable operator consortium CableLabs
said it has released a first draft of the OpenCable
specification. The consortium hopes the spec will
become the standard that lets cable-fed interactive
services work across set-top boxes made by a
variety of vendors.

The first-draft documents of OpenCable are being
released to vendors for review and comment,
CableLabs said. They summarize the kind of
services a set-top box must support and the
technical features required to do so.

Rather than seeking a specific microprocessor or
operating system, the consortium said that
support for most interactive, cable-delivered
services will come in the form of a "middle layer"
of software, tapping well-worn Internet specs such
as HTML, CGI, and JavaScript. The cable industry
also announced today the formation the Cable
Broadband Forum, a new initiative backed by
major PC and cable companies seeking to propel
the cable industry into the business of high-speed,
consumer Internet access.
