Our philosophy is that every post is special and deserves its own page...To answer others that have raised the question, I have no direct experience with which to back up my claim [of adverse effects... But I know that part of what makes SI work is everyone knowing that everyone is viewing posts within the same paradigm. We choose not to cater to the 5% that want to look at the world differently....

Brad,

It's obvious that when it comes to sensible features such as View XX replies or clubhouse threads, your philosophy is willing to bend. As I write, there are 13 replies to your reply #1240. Do you really feel that these posts are made any less special if you access them via techstocks.com ?

Yet I cannot understand why it should be a matter of world views. I'll bet that many of the proponents of a View Many Messages feature are just people who are trying to speed up access to the threads that they love. For some reason, you have chosen to lump this simple concept together with the filter/ignore button issue (an idea that is deserving of controversy) and reply in like manner.

Human nature does have it's subtleties: such as the delusion that those that disagree with us are in the "minority". As I would guess I am among both the others and the mythic 5% who deserve neither catering nor direct responses, I'll drop the subject.

Michael

Well, I will accept your viewing philosophy because 99% of the time the posts load instantly. Having now read the band width discussion, it is obvious others have problems.

Let me repeat , however, that printing a string of posts without all the redundant top and bottom information, perhaps by entering the post numbers, would really be nicer than having to copy them to WP.

>>If you like the clubhouse format, then why not participate in the
clubhouses?

Well, swell. I take it you will arrange for the posts I want
to read to be posted on those threads.

What I, and several others, have been talking about is the
CHOICE of how we view the threads. Is a matter of efficiency
in reading.

I'll make a small proposal. Offer the choice, monitor the
choice, and see if it's just 5% who use it. If so, maybe it's
not worth maintaining. I'll wager, though, if it were
widely known to be available, far more than 5% and quite
possibly a majority would opt to be able to see messages in what
I've termed the "dialog" format (like a play script).

Mr. Dryer,

<<SI was built on the subject/response paradigm.>> Notwithstanding your
disclaimer shortly after that statement regarding uncharted waters, the
progenitor of the subject/response paradigm just has to be Stan Lee, of Marvel
Comics fame. In grade school during the "duck and cover fifties," I marveled
at the Letters to the Editor section. If you're looking for a grand old tradition
that you appear to have replicated here on SI then there you find it! Stan Lee
treated every letter with the same attitudes you convey here on SI. It is a
high achievement. Kudos to you all!

God bless him, the Lee dude is still sucking air and still at the helm. I swear
that Marvel Comics are the best philisophical/sociological periodicals in print.
SI should do so well!

Now for my request. <VBG> Is there a way you could allow me to retrieve a posting
in process should my modem wink out all of a sudden, clipping me offline? It
happened to me again today right as I was finishing one of my *way-too-long*
postings. All that work lost, forever. There has to be some way your server could
hold at least the last "preview" copy of my post. Please say you can!
