As internal Web sites inundate the corporate network, many companies are attracted to the same technologies that have been the basis of commercial search-engine companies. At the same time, search-engine companies are realizing that the same crawling, searching, and navigation technologies they've created can be used for distributed intranets. So, Infoseek is now offering Ultraseek Server, a search engine that includes a host of search features, allows for realtime index updates, provides performance enhancements like smart spidering, and includes browser-based administration features.

Because searching behind the firewall presents a unique set of problems, Ultraseek Server extends the capabilities of the Infoseek engine in several key ways. The server offers the ability to cross firewalls and index password-protected sites. The nature of small, distributed sites means the same document may reside in multiple locations, so the product allows site administrators to monitor and control document mirroring. Because intranet sites go down more frequently than public sites, Ultraseek Server offers clean error recovery.

Other features of the engine include full-text indexing, natural-language queries, proper-name recognition, intelligent stemming, result-set searches, and the ability to adjust revisit frequencies. Remote administration features allow the administrator to suspend or resume, set revisit frequencies, set spider threads, restart, change ports, and index cache size, all through the browser. A set of Python scripts are also included, which provide full control over user interface, screen layout, and results ranking. You can write your own Python scripts to further customize the environment or add new features.

The engine is priced beginning at $995 and is available for trial download at software.infoseek.com. The company is also providing the complete Python source code to customers. Ultraseek Server is currently available for Solaris workstations, but a Windows NT version is expected around midyear. For more information, contact Infoseek at 408-567-2700 or www.infoseek.com.

Python is free to use and abuse just like Perl, although
their licenses are a little different and neither is copylefted, GNU-style.

As far as Intranet search engines go, many sites use Excite's
freebie version of a search engine, Netscape includes one (and
sells separately) as part of their server suite, and then there
are free tools like ht://Dig that work on distributed Intranet
with much less effort than most commercial software packages.
