Excellent post Ron, many of us find it hard to grasp the real costs of going down for even 4 hours. For some companies it costs them Millions of dollars. You reminded me of a conversation I had with program manager in the mid-80's (A Coke manager who lived outside of Atlanta, Georgia). He mentioned that when the main computer system went down for just one hour, they lost 4 hours of productivity.

The reason why? When the system goes down, everyone goes on a break, an extended break. By the time they realize the system is back up, and make it back to their desk a few hours have gone by along with a few million in productivity, lost sales, delayed shipments, etc...

There is a cost justification for some of these companies to make sure they don't go down for even one day. And, I bet they'll pay millions for that piece of mind.
