It's just a hunch. I don't know of any technologies under development, and I'm not a physical chemist.

But the technical challenges of using fusion to make cheap electricity in a safe and clean manner are simply immense. Fusion is not "clean" because of the high radiation fields that need to be generated. The entire reactor unavoidably becomes radioactive.

A hydrogen fuel cycle would have some very strong pluses, in that there are no "greenhouse gases" or particulates emitted. The waste product is pure water. The major negative would be accident risks, since hydrogen gas is explosive.

Checking SI for messages on hydrogen just now I came up with BLDPF as a potential short.
