Brad,

I think bandwidth is a big part of it. I know that I think of View Many Messages when waiting for a page to load. Many of us are going to read every single post in our favorite threads no matter what...and sometimes it feels like the next button is the enemy.

Thanks for the honest replies. And congratulations on your merger with go2net.

Michael

Do you think the desire for View Many Messages is driven by low-bandwidth connections?

I do. Having switched from a conventional modem to a cable modem (i.e. from 28.8K to, real-world, 1.5M) I can say that "fluff" posts don't bother me in the least anymore as I can now skip them in the blink of an eye. Prior to that, yes, I wish I had ESP in choosing on which messages to chance clicking.

Compuserve veterans like myself recall the days of 3600 baud modems and sky-high connect charges where off-line readers were all the rage. [Such software used to log-in, grab all new messages for your chosen thread, allow you to read them off-line, respond, and then upload your responses on the next connect] Theoretically someone could write such a program for SI, but with connect charges being so cheap and with the risk of missing a pertinent message while reading off-line, I doubt many would use one.

However, if SI is looking for a fresh source of revenue from its user-base, there are a few options I would pay extra each year to get:
1. A "download thread" button that tossed everything into a Word or text file
2. A "download author" button for collecting all the posts of a given person (I'd love to have a copy of all my own posts)
3. A "download new" button which would key on SubjectMarks and PeopleMarks

There are times when I do want to be selective on what I read on a given thread. In those instances I will peruse the index gambling by the text shown which messages to view. Often I don't know how well I spent my time until I've finished reading most of it. Thus, for everyone who wants to see a more detailed summary of the next xx messages, all I can say is you are fooling yourself if you think technology can compensate for human frailties.
