US West, Dell, Cisco to launch PCs for phone lines NEW YORK, May 6 (Reuters) - U S West Communications Group Dell Computer Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc. said Wednesday they will introduce personal computers with high-speed digital modems that work over traditional copper telephone wires. Dell will make Cisco ADSL modems available on certain Dell Dimension XPS desktop personal computers this year. Cisco's ADSL modems allow PC users to receive voice and data services through a single phone line connected to a PC at speeds of up to 7 megabits, or nearly 125 times faster than standard 56k modems. U S West has said it plans to introduce asymetric digital subscriber line (ADLS) technology in more than 40 cities in its 14-state region by mid-year. The ADLS technology gives customers high-speed Internet access over standard phone lines. The modem, when combined with the U S West's ADLS service offerings, will allow customers to maintain an "always-on" digital connection to the Internet, or other data networks, over a dedicated unused portion of an existing phone line -- without any dial-up required. Customers would be able to open their Internet browser software to make or receive phone calls over the same line while simultaneously accessing the Internet. "Dell's ADSL-ready PCs will encourage more people to benefit from the Internet revolution," said Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers. Earlier this year, computer industry giants Compaq Computer Corp , Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp joined with leading telephone and networking companies to set uniform standards and promote high-speed Internet access over ordinary phone lines.
