CGB,

You write "I know that when I was a child I had a lot of x-rays of my hip because I had to have two surgeries on it, and the doctors were able to tell me at that time when later in life cancer was likely to develop in that area due to radiation, within a ten year period.

"Is that wrong?"

Yes, it is very, VERY wrong and perhaps a figment of a child's (your) overactive imagination.

As an aside, did the doctor say anything at the time about your prospects for conceiving and bearing a healthy child? You did, didn't you? And, I might add, somewhat late in your reproductive life?

Holly

Christine,

Yes, I believe that is wrong. No one can know *for certain* that their cancer was caused by any particular carcinogenic insult, radiation being just one of many we all face throughout our lives.

If the Feynmann book is reputable, as you say, the author may have been quoting him accurately. But wasn't he quite ill at the time? Maybe the illness affected his cognitive faculties in a detrimental manner. That is all I can think of to explain it.
