Re: EMC; Video editing

For the record, Gus likes EMC. I wonder where he is?

I recently got into the digital video editing business (not entirely by choice.)

Holy shoepolish, this stuff chews up drivespace like a sharks in a koi pond.

At 1/2 NTSC resolutions, we're talking 400MB per MINUTE uncompressed video at 24bpp. I knew the numbers before, but actually dealing with this kind of storage constraint personally is a real eye opener. I'll have to convert some partitions to NTFS just to get a partition big enough to compile my goddam video -- 2GB FAT limit is a bottleneck at this point ... only holds 5 minutes of video!

If there were some mass-market application for video editing, HDD demand would blow through the ceiling. If I were SEG/QNTM/IBM I would think about making video import hardware REAL REAL cheap ... the politics of the situation would obstruct that kind of venture seeding I suppose. Something to be said for monopolies -- Intel has no problem seeding all kinds of potential CPU boosters (that they can think of, anyway.)

God bless,
PX
