Nissan Motor Shrs Dn 2.7%; Briefly Sink Below Y400

TOKYO (Nikkei/Dow Jones)--Shares of Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY or 7201) are lower Wednesday afternoon after briefly hitting a year-to-date low of Y397 in morning trading, the first drop below Y400 since 1975.

At 0523 GMT (1:23 a.m. EDT) Nissan Motor shares were down Y11, or 2.7%, at Y403 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on volume of 5.1 million shares.

Institutional investors are selling through ING Barings, Kankaku and Nikko securities to trim losses on fears of a further shrinkage in new car sales, traders said.

An official at Tokai Asset Management Co. said a full-fledged rally for the stock depends on whether the new versions of the company's flagship models Skyline and Cefiro, to be introduced in the current year, will help boost domestic sales because U.S. car sales are slowing. A recovery in domestic sales is key for a recovery of the company's earnings, he said.

The official added that radical restructuring could possibly help the stock price since he expects no other good news to boost the price for now.
