Yes, ESV for example is showing +7/8 and they never even open until 9:40 or so. I had my coffee so I don't think its a dream. (I doubt its correct either).

some MM and some individual investors mess with the b/a by placing strange orders close/at near the close of the trading day.

It usually means nothing

Like abc is b/a 10 x 10 1/8
If I place and order to sell 100 shares at 11.50 , near 4 pm, the closing ask could be 10 x 11.50

well shoot...that's just idiotic

but there are a lot of idiot's out there!!
