>> I could easily do a search and find plenty of quotes from the Bible that are very harshly dominating towards women.<<

Okay, DCF, here are some Bible verses:
And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife; Then shalt thou bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails; And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father a full month; and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will. Deut. 21:11-14

Therefore, the Lord will strike with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts. Isaiah 3:17
It is good for a man not to touch a woman. I Cor. 7:1

And when he was come in he did eat and drink and said, Go see now this cursed woman. And they went to bury her, but they found no more of her than the skull and the feet, and the palms of her hands. II Kings 9:33-35
And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? . . . Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. Numbers 31: 15-18

<>> all the deaths in the Inquisition for example, and the extent of domestic violence in America, make strong statements. <<
yes they do. they make the statement that men were not followers of Christ or they would not be acting this way.>>
This shows that you don't understand the history of Europe. The Catholic Church, and to a much lesser degree other Christians, burned women at the stake by design, and priests implored men from the pulpit to beat their women, to control them. In agrarian, rural, Europe, men and women had worked in the fields side by side, and the women were very important, and they worshipped gods and goddesses. This was very threatening to the Christians who were taking over Europe.

Unfortunately, many Christian men commit acts of domestic violence. Are you saying that these men are not really followers of Christ? Who are you to decide that?

<>>Did you know that early Celtic women in Ireland owned property on their own,<<>could leave their marriages every year simply by walking out on February first? <<
This was progress? this is good? God says two become one.>>
The point here is that women were not considered property by the early Celts, and shared property equally in their marriages. Today in Ireland, which of course was taken over by the Catholic church, there is no divorce, and if a couple separates, or if the woman becomes a widow, she is entitled to less than half of his estate. Before Chritianity there was less male domination of women.

>> but I think it is a mistake to assume that religious belief systems have been benign or positive on the general history of man.<<
So let's hear your better way Christine.>>
How about letting people who are believers believe, and end discrimination against those who don't (and stop calling them satanic, which is just ridiculous). How about totally separating church and state, and ending discrimination against homosexuals and Jews? |
