In "The Last Empire", that Johnston & Hoffman photograph, "Bathing in the Hooghly River", could have been taken in the 1990's, rather than the 1890's.

Boy, did that photo freshen up my memories - I even thought I smelled smoldering manure.

I remember being in Calcutta in about 1982, when there was such excitement as the first automatic traffic signal was being installed.

God, I love Calcutta.
