Wow, small world. I worked closely with Cutler on the early i860 based NT development, and also in developing tools for the MIPS and Alpha ports, we had previously worked together on VAX stuff in the late 70's and early 80's. Most of my experience with MSFT recently has been with the NT team so I probably have a somewhat biased sample of the quality of the thinking and development.
That was also my seat in the bleachers to watch the OS/2 battle. The other obvious fallout from the collapse of the IBM/MSFT partnership was giving UNIX a free run during the crucial period in the early 90's. Sun and HP had virtually no opposition in the midrange, due the the lack of clear direction in Wintel OS. Unix was not to reliable at that time either...
