Zead, >>1. What's so new about the VST Zip? Is this the 12.7" drive? Or just down right right new design?<< The only thing new about the VST Zip drive is that it is an option on the new Powerbook G3. >>2. Increasing Returns analysis, when was it written? A year ago, I would've shared their view, today, I'm a little skeptical.<< Actually, the date on the increasing returns analysis was 12/97 - five months ago. >>I say this becasue I see the Zip losing momentum.<< It doesn't look like Zip drives are losing momentum to me. Certainly aftermarket sales slowed in the first quarter, but overall unit growth was quite healthy. This from the 1Q98 earnings news release: >>...Zip drive units shipped increased 61 percent over the first quarter of last year...<<biz.yahoo.com >>I was looking at a DELL ad in USA Today paper and only one system came with a Zip, nothing like the old days when a Zip was included in 3 out of 5 systems.<< Zip drives on all Dell computers are optional. Some pre-configured Dell computers include a Zip, some do not. Whatever the case, if you want an internal Zip, you can get one, on any Dell computer. If you go to the Dell online store, you will notice that Zip drives are an available option on all Dell computers. In fact, Dell is nice enough to pre-check this option for you. Quality control problems: We are all aware of Iomega's quality control problems. Clearly, one of the reasons KE was let go was his lack of adequate attention to this very important detail. I think it's also the reason Dunn asked James Sierk (former senior vice president of Quality and Productivity of AlliedSignal Inc.) to take over as CEO. >>Hence, nothing to get excited about the report, IMHO.<< I agree, but it certainly makes for interesting reading and provides a new perspective about Iomega, at least for me.
