To All:

Just in case anyone thinks that the Y2K situation is a "pretend problem" a
friend of mine just emailed me the following:

"Now even the spooks are spooked, the following is a public statement released
by the CIA as Y2K has surfaced on their radar screen. Checking Micro Soft's
list of recent software that is not fully compliant I saw that Windows NT is
not even fully compliant and that is the system our power plant uses for plant
operation. We are roughly 50% percent integrated with PC controls and the other
50% is still analog controls from the 70's."

[Excerpted from a Reuters story]

"WE'RE CONCERNED ABOUT the potential disruption of power grids,
telecommunications and banking services" among other possible fallout, especially
in countries already torn by political tensions, Sherry Burns said.

In an interview with Reuter, she said CIA systems engineers and intelligence
analysts were focusing beyond the technical problem of reprogramming computers
to recognize dates when the calendar turns to Jan.1, 2000.

Instead, the spy agency has begun to collect and analyze information on
preparations for the "social, political and economic tumult" that could
flow from interruptions of essential services in some fragile societies.

Millions of computers and embedded chips - some central to financial markets,
air traffic control systems and even elevators and heating systems in office
buildings - cannot distinguish between 1900 and 2000 because years have been
expressed in two-digit shorthand in old programming."

Show me the venture capitalist that would bite hard into a business plan with
the above disclaimer!
