MSFT and the DOJ have an agreement that was formed several years ago. The agreement( as I understand it) limits MSFT. I.E. MSFT is allowed to make improvements to their operating system but cannot go beyond that, whatever "that" may be(I say whatever because all terms in any contract or agreement are subject to judicial determination-what the actual terms mean). This current bout with the DOJ started because the DOJ said MSFT violated their previous agreement by expanding the scope of W95 thereby going beyond the scope of their agreement. MSFT says they did not go beyond this limitation because the inclusion of IE into the operating system is an improvement of the operating system. The DOJ contends that the inclusion of IE into operating system goes beyond making improvements and therefore violates the agreement that was made several years ago. So as I understand it this is not a political decision this is an interpretation of a PREVIOUS AGREEMENT between MSFT and the DOJ. This is not coming out of nowhere . If any of my facts are wrong than I am more than open to hearing about it. But to state that the DOJ is making a political decision ignores the previous bout and agreement between he DOJ and MSFT

IMHO, Microsoft isn't worried about the browser "market." (Not much of a market if they're free.) I think Microsoft is worried about someone coming up with an internet interface that morphs into an operating system, and that their actions are more defensive than offensive. Whenever someone comes up with an attractive interface to the internet, I believe Microsoft will react. I have heard that when Christian missionaries reached India, the Hindus accepted Jesus as a God, with all of their other Gods. That's Microsoft and the internet.
