Caveat: the only thing I know about oil wells and refineries is what I have picked up on the Internet while doing DD on RNTK.


Yes, most of the natural gas is flared off (burned) at the site because the cost of converting it to CNG and transporting it as CNG would be excessive. This flared off natural gas is a loss to the owner of the well and it contributes additional so-called greenhouse gases ... which are accused of causing the so-called Global Warming effect. Hence there is a lot of political correctness riding on some form of gas conversion.


Re portability and transportability, I don't know. There has been considerable discussion on this thread regarding putting a plant on a barge and tying it up to, for instance, a North Sea well.


My hunch is that the current issue is not so much one of portability but of scaleability -- will the small-scale test sites still work when you make them 100 or 1,000 times as large. Again, I do not know the answer.


FWIW, I see the possibility of RNTK's iron-based and SLHO's (or other) cobalt-based installations co-existing in the marketplace: RNTK for refinery bottoms and for poisoned natural gas applications, others for pure natural gas apps. But there also has been some discussion of various improvements on efficiency which *might ... just *might* ... make RNTK's process competitive with a cobalt process even for the pure natural gas applications.
