Michael,

You're Right On. I posted here earlier today that anyone making comments that promote derogatory stereotypes is likely to be offensive:

California is the home of the John Birch Society. Maybe we should all stay away from CA.

I've been to Idaho Falls, ID several times. Nice people! Didn't see anyone walking around with guns, but saw plenty of evidence that there were Mormons around. The Mormons didn't seem to pose any threat to me.

David

Michael, I realize Idaho is beautiful and scenic, and home to many people who are not militia members. However, in response to your questioning whether Idaho was full of white supremacists or not, I proved that it was, providing a list of the specific organizations, and a map showing that the state of Idaho is particularly infested with them, more so than most states, on a per capita basis. This is simply fact.

The way this is different from saying that San Francisco is full of people with Aids, is that people with Aids do not go about offending others with mean and bigoted bumper stickers. They never burn or shoot at synagogues, or wear white sheets, or carve swastikas on buildings, or commit hate crimes. They are very seldom even armed!!! And they tend to be tolerant and compassionate of others, generally speaking. When my husband and daughter were in Idaho, they heard a lot of ignorant and racist remarks, something you would not hear in San Francisco.

Where someone lives is a very personal choice. I will not even go to Orange County, California, because it is very much too conservative for me there. I lived near there when I was a child, and never went back after I went away to college. Everyone has places they are happy, and places they are not. This is just my personal opinion, and I am quite sure Orange County has many, many delightful people living there.
