Unemployment figures are based on first time unemployment claims, not second time or after 6 months. Once a person gets dropped off unemployment they fall into the proverbial bit bucket. For the NYT to say companies are salivating for the DEC cast offs...BS. What do they base that ridicuous claim on. The ones that know Linux or VMS, both of which are obscure OS's might as well get fitted for their paper hat. As for your question of what is the basis for my claim...How about 25+ years in the field AND most of that being in the Boston area market. It is tough to get a decent job up there. The market is extremely tight..If you are really interested go look up InfoWorld of about a month ago, there was a large story on exactly this issue, plus it is occasionally discussed in other HighTech industry rags.
