Ascend Communications corrects and replaces previous announcement of major milestone: Ships 50,000th MAX, issued May 6

Business Wire - May 07, 1998 18:57

NOTE: The following news release replaces and corrects the previous Ascend
Communications news release, which ran earlier Wednesday on Business Wire,
BW0035-5/6 (ASCEND-COMMUNICATIONS).

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 1998--Ascend Communications Inc.
(NASDAQ:ASND), the leading provider of wide area network (WAN) solutions for
network service providers, today announced that it has shipped its 50,000th MAX.
Enabling millions of users to log on to the Internet, the MAX line of WAN Access
Switches has achieved a significant milestone that marks Ascend's history of providing
more than four million access ports to Network Service Providers and enterprise
customers around the world.

"We are very excited to have reached this important milestone," said Mory Ejabat, CEO of
Ascend. "We designed the MAX platform to support the dynamic connectivity
requirements of high-volume Internet access and corporate remote access. As the product
line has expanded, we have continued to deliver the robust functionality and range of
access technologies that service providers, as well as corporate customers need to be
successful. Our 50,000th shipped MAX represents a continued commitment to our
customers, and validates our established market leadership."

Market Leading Product Satisfies Key Customer Needs

Ascend is the market leader in WAN Access Switches, with over 40 percent of the analog
ports deployed worldwide, according to market research firm Dell'Oro Group. Ascend's
MAX and MAX TNT products enable enterprise customers and service providers to
deploy remote access and Internet dial-up access, as well as providing a wide range of
additional features through Ascend's recently-announced True Access(tm) Operating
System.

"The MAX product line has continually proven its worth as a mission-critical element of our
service infrastructure," said Rob Welsh, director of engineering of dial-up services at GTE
Internetworking. "As Ascend raises the bar in functionality and scalability, we have been
able to leverage that innovation to provide our customers with new service offerings."

The MAX and MAX TNT have maintained industry leadership by satisfying the needs of
leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs), traditional and competitive carriers, and
corporate customers worldwide. Ascend's MAX products provide reliable and scalable
infrastructure to an ever expanding and integrating telecom/data industry. With ISP clients
that include PSInet, GTE Internetworking, and UUNET, Ascend provides the majority of
all backend Internet infrastructure. In addition, leading carriers and Competitive Local
Exchange Carriers (CLECs), including XCOM and Teleport, and major corporations such
as Hewlett-Packard, Kinko's, Nintendo of American and others utilize MAX products for
their networking solutions. Internationally, MAX switches are used by many of the Postal
Telegraph and Telephone (PTT) agencies and well-known ISPs in Europe, Asia-Pacific
and South America.

Ascend's Best of Breed Solutions

The MAX and MAX/TNT are critical components of Ascend's "best-of-breed" solution
set for service providers. As a stand-out in the data networking industry, Ascend provides
a complete set of solutions, including enterprise connectivity, service provider access, and
core systems, as well as technologies and solutions that provide end-to-end
quality-of-service (QoS), security, and network management. This "best of breed"
capability allows service providers to build and manage revenue-generating services over
existing and new infrastructures.
